Businesses Supporting Businesses

Buy Local First isn’t only about consumers choosing independent businesses. It’s also about independent businesses choosing each other. When one local business actively looks out for another, the effect of every local dollar spent multiplies.

The Support Exchange

Participating businesses are connected with another participating independent business in the community. From there, it’s about keeping that business in mind in ordinary, genuine ways: referring a customer when it makes sense, recommending them, mentioning them, or sharing their work. It’s not a quota, and it’s not tracked with points or rankings. It’s simply local businesses being intentional about supporting each other the way they’d want to be supported.

Why It Matters

Individual actions compounding throughout the entire community, not just at a single cash register.

Consumers supporting local businesses, plus local businesses supporting other local businesses, means those actions build on each other. A referral from one trusted local business to another often carries more weight than any advertisement, and it costs nothing but a moment of intention.

Collective Recognition

Businesses that actively participate in the Support Exchange become eligible for inclusion in a collective press release, published twice each year, recognizing local businesses that support other local businesses. This is shared recognition for the community of participating businesses, not an individual press release for every advertiser.

Growing the Whole Movement Together

A portion of Buy Local First advertising revenue is reinvested into paid promotion designed to expand consumer awareness of Buy Local First itself. This is pooled promotion for the movement as a whole, meaning every participating business benefits from a bigger, more aware audience without needing to fund their own individual ad campaign.
